Catherine Zeta-Jones to host Swansea show after receiving Freedom of the City

Oscar-winning actor Catherine Zeta-Jones is set to win Honorary Freedom of Swansea next month.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is a multi-award winning actor. She won an Academy Award for playing Velma Kelly in the screen adaptation of the musical Chicago.

Her other starring roles include the films Ocean’s 12, The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment and The Terminal.

The Hollywood star was born in the Mayals area and has been an ambassador for Swansea for more than 25 years.

On 27th June, councillors at Swansea Council will be asked to offer her the city’s highest honour.

This honour will be richly-deserved. Thanks to her long and varied career on stage, TV and in the movies, Catherine Zeta-Jones is one of the best-known faces on the planet.

Most people know that Swansea is Catherine’s home city and we have always been hugely-proud of Catherine’s achievements over the years.

Due to her ambassadorial role for Swansea and her services to film and charity, it is particularly fitting that we are offering Catherine the highest honour we can confer in the 50th year of Swansea’s status as a city.

I am sure everyone will be thrilled at this news.

The Freedom of the City is set to be given to her at an award ceremony on 24th July. After this, she will be performing in an ‘Evening with Catherine’, a show with anecdotes from her early life in Mumbles through to her acting career. The evening will be supporting Swansea charities.
