Chip shop husband accused of murder served customers while wife received treatment

A husband accused of murdering his wife with boiling oil continued to serve customers fish and chips while she was being treated by paramedics, a court has heard.

71-year-old Geoffrey Bran denies pouring hot oil on his wife, 69-year-old Mavis Bran, at the chip shop they owned together in Carmarthenshire in October last year.

Mrs Bran died in Morriston Hospital six days after suffering the burns at The Chipoteria in Hermon.

Mavis Bran

The couple, who had been married for 34 years, opened the chip shop together in January 2018.

The court heard how Mr and Mrs Bran would argue regularly and throw items at each other.

Giving evidence Mrs Bran’s friend Cerys Davies said the couple had been due to be filmed by Welsh broadcaster S4C but the filming was postponed after Mrs Bran suffered a black eye.

In the days before the incident, Mrs Davies said Mrs Bran told her she was frightened of her husband and feared he was going to kill her.

Police interviews with Mr Bran after his arrest were read to the court in which he was asked why his wife would have accused him of throwing the oil on her.

Mr Bran replied that she must have been confused.

The trial continues.
